Saudi Women To Receive Divorce Notices Via Text Messages

In a new justice ministry regulation which will take effect from Sunday, Saudi women will no longer be the last to know that they have been divorced.

The women will receive a text message when a court issues their husband’s divorce decrees.

Currently, some men register divorce deeds at the courts without informing their wives and the new measure is to ensure that women get their rights in a divorce.

Saudi women are shackled with the male guardianship system that requires them to obtain approval
to apply for a passport, travel out of the country, study abroad on a government scholarship, get married or even leave prison.
Women have gained more rights since Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman consolidated his power a couple of years ago.

Saudi Arabia has lifted the ban on driving and has also loosened many restrictions related to gender mixing and social life.
