Female Tourist Killed After Falls On Her In Hong Kong

A female tourist was killed in Hong Kong when a window from a hotel fell on her.

The 24-year-old tourist from the Chinese mainland was struck by the window which fell from the 16th floor of the Mira Hotel in the busy Tsim Sha Tsui shopping district on Monday.

She was taken to a hospital but doctors were unable to save her. A male friend was also struck by the window but he sustained only light injuries.

A hotel cleaner was arrested in accordance with a law against allowing objects to fall from buildings and harm or endanger the public.

The accident sparked alarm that such an incidence could occur in a city stacked with high rise buildings.

Local police officer, Chan Ka-ying told reporters on Monday that only staff with a special key have the authorization to open the windows.
The hotel cleaner was later released on bail on Tuesday pending further enquiries and is required to report back to the police in early February.
The hotel authorities have vowed to cooperate with authorities during the course of the investigation.
